C.IAS Academy Awards Discussion

C.IAS Academy Awards Discussion

Center for Inter-American Studies (Elisabethstraße 59/II, 8010 Graz)

The Center for Inter-American Studies (C.IAS) is hosting an Academy Awards Discussion.

Date: March 12, 2025

Time: 5:00 - 6:30 PM

Location: Center for Inter-American Studies (Elisabethstraße 59/II)

This year's Academy Awards, to be held on March 2, 2025 seem almost incidental amidst the tumult and constitutional usurpation going on in the United States right now. However, as an important cultural event, as an expression of a rich, liberal, and coastal milieu, as the epitome of everything decried by the right as 'woke', the Oscars are a strong contrast to and an oblique reflection of what is occurring in Washington D.C.

In this event, we will be discussing the nominated films, their aesthetic merit as well as their cultural significance, and respond to the award decisions made by the Academy. We will also reflect on the meaning and importance of an event such as the Oscars in the context of the wider American culture and the contemporary social and political moment. We are looking forward to taking up all these topics and themes in a participatory discussion with you!

Join us for free drinks and snacks!
