Socrates Café
Ongoing event
Bar Flora, Park Hotel Graz (Leonhardstraße 8, 8010 Graz)
ÖAG is offering a regular English discussion group under the title SOCRATES CAFÉ, on the first Wednesday of every month. There are Socrates Café meetings all over the world.
If you would like more information about the idea behind the Socrates Café movement and learn about some of the topics we have discussed, please email nina.gettler@gmail.com and request an information sheet.
Our purpose is to engage in a lively exchange of ideas. Some of the topics that we've discussed are: How does one live a fulfilled life?/ Is cultural appropriation a good or bad thing?/ Who defines or should define what is good and evil?/ Is it justifiable to apply current mores to the past and to judge the past according to modern-day sensibilities?/ Is it valid to consider an artist's personal life when judging their work?
The format: discussions in a public venue, where topics are not dictated by a facilitator but are chosen by the attendees. People come with their burning questions, and the first few minutes are devoted to making a list of suggested topics. In the first round of voting, people vote for as many topics as they find interesting. Usually, the top three topics are voted on in the second round, where everyone can only vote for one.
